Who is this for?
Professional trainers, either working as internal trainers or as independent trainers. Suitable for trainers of all experience levels.
For beginners, they will find everything they need to start designing and facilitating training to a high standard.
For more experienced trainers, this course will help them unite their own experience with the new ideas they gain from this course into a coherent framework that enables them to maintain consistent high standards.
Ultimately, this course will help all trainers design and deliver to a consistent, high standard.
What will they learn?
This course is broken down into 3 main components:
- Presentation and Storytelling Skills
A facilitative trainer needs to face an audience with confidence, command the room and inspire through storytelling. These skills form the foundation of facilitative training, and help overcome the challenges trainers face with confidence, authority and communicating complex ideas in a clear way.
- Training Design
Very few trainers are able to design to a high standard. Many trainers don’t even design training themselves, and just deliver training that other people designed. But when a trainer is able to deliver training they designed to a high standard, they can bring a lot more engagement, meaning and authority to their training. Good Design skills can even open up more opportunities for a trainer’s career development.
- Facilitative Training
The best trainers flex to the needs of their learners. They have a variety of techniques in their toolboxes that they can take out in any moment and use to engage, explain, elicit and so on. They know when and how to help people relax, and when and how to push people. They can follow a plan, drop their plan or adapt their plan during any moment in their training. This is what Facilitative Training is ultimately about; adapting to the learner’s needs in the moment.
How is this different to other courses?
This course is for a MAXIMUM OF 6 PARTICIPANTS. This helps ensure optimum interaction with each participant throughout the entire learning journey.
This is a highly practical and blended learning journey. It includes self-paced learning, online group-coaching, assignments, evaluation and certification, run over 3 months.
This course is designed, facilitated and coached by Jamie Dixon, and based on his book “Shaping Paths – How to Design and Deliver PRACTICAL Training”.
Jamie has over 10 years’ experience designing and delivering training for over 140 multinational companies. Thanks to his Shaping Paths approach, clients frequently praise his training for being highly practical.
Learners will get:
- Access to 8+ hours of video content
- 40+ tools and templates
- Signed copy of “Shaping Paths – How to Design and Deliver PRACTICAL Training” book
- 8 hours (4 x 2 hour sessions) online group coaching
- Ongoing WeChat support
- Filmed presentation evaluation
- Training plan evaluation
- Facilitated workshop evaluation
- Shaping Paths Facilitative Trainer Certificate
The self-paced aspect means that learners can process the content in their own time at their own pace. Time with Jamie in the group coaching is then focused on answering questions, practicing and getting feedback. This allows learners to get the most out of their interaction with the instructor. Throughout the entire learning journey, learners will be in a WeChat group with Jamie where they can ask him questions and interact with him outside of the group coaching sessions.
The tools and templates make it easier for learners to start applying what they learn immediately. They will also get permanent access to the video content, which explains how to use the tools. This way, they don’t need to worry about remembering what they learn, they will always have these tools and videos available for reference even long after the course is finished.
The certification is based on the standards in the frameworks in Jamie’s Shaping Paths approach. There are 3 parts to these standards:
- 10 Minute Presentation Video – To demonstrate the ability to present with confidence and using Jamie’s PRACTICAL Storytelling Principles
- Training Plan – To demonstrate the ability to design practical tools and design a training session around a tool using Jamie’s 5 Elements Model
- 20-30 Minute Facilitated Workshop Video – To demonstrate the ability to facilitate a workshop using Jamie’s 5 Elements Model
The standards are strict, and Jamie will only award certification for meeting standards in each of the 3 parts above. If they do not meet any of the standards, they can resubmit to Jamie for evaluation up to 3 months after the course is finished.
Jamie will also write a personalised recommendation for all trainers who pass the certification.
What is the Shaping Paths Approach?
Jamie’s Shaping Paths book was the result of more than 6 years of researching and experimenting in the training room.
In the early days of his career, Jamie discovered that a lot of training wasn’t practical. So much training was irrelevant to learners needs and their working reality, and focused too much on the Why and What without going into the How.
His research focused on the How part of training. He explored various fields, from evolutionary psychology to marketing, behaviour science to experience design and so on.
This led to several key conclusions.
- Outsource Human Memory
We should never depend on people’s memories for remembering things. The human memory is unreliable. Instead of depending on human memory, we should condense any content into practical tools that learners can take away, reference and use when back at work.
- Behaviour Change is Always Tiny
The easiest way to change human behaviour, is to make the change easy. Habits, motivation, environment and so on mean that humans are only capable of making tiny changes to behaviour. This means that good design is essential to help identify the tiny changes that will lead to the most significant results, and then design practical tools to help learners make those tiny changes.
- Facilitative Trainers Flex With Purpose
Facilitative Trainers must focus on a clear purpose during every moment with their learners. When they know what they need to achieve, and how to achieve it, during any moment of the training, then they can always flex to their learners needs. This led to Jamie’s 5 Elements model which summarises 5 key purposes during training; Priming, Guiding, Practicing, Reflecting and Committing.
