A Mindset for the Modern World
The 5 Ownership Habits is a series of self and peer coaching tools designed to help leaders and teams increase resilience, motivation and adaptability. I designed The 5 Ownership Habits in collaboration with Ben Massen.
The modern business environment is complicated, fast-paced and rapidly changing. Leaders and individuals around the world struggle to adapt to the challenges this modern world brings.
We frequently hear the following concerns from leaders and individuals:
“How am I supposed to know what to do if our strategy is always changing?”
“We can’t keep up with our competition!”
“The political situation creates so much uncertainty its almost impossible to plan too far ahead.”

The 5 Ownership Habits
The 5 Ownership Habits has been designed to give leaders and individuals more power to manage these challenges.
The 5 Ownership Habits
We define Ownership as taking control of our thoughts, feelings and actions in challenging situations.
In life we are often triggered and allow our emotions to take control. This leads us to lose focus of what matters most and react in the moment, often in ways we regret.
Each of these habits includes a series of tools designed to help us regain control when we most need it, and to build a culture of ownership in your organisation.

Detach
To give yourself space to think.

Acknowledge
To avoid acting on emotions.

Broaden the View
To get a more accurate understanding of the situation.

Define Outcomes
To focus your energy on what matters most.

Take Action
To own it, go do it!
The Benefits of Increased Ownership
Resilience

Resilience is the ability to recover from set backs. When things change so fast, setbacks are inevitable. Set backs can leave people with poor morale and too much stress which easily leads to burn out.
By taking more ownership, individuals can adjust their mindset to improve their morale and change their reaction to stress. This helps lower the chances of getting burnt out, and helps people bounce back faster from setbacks.
Motivation

When people have the desire to do something, they are motivated. But with so many challenges in the modern day business environment, people don’t always get to choose what they want to do and this leads to poor motivation.
By taking more ownership, individuals can reassess how certain tasks fit into the bigger picture for them, and create more desire for what they do.
Adaptability

Adaptability is the ability to change approach when the situation changes. Things are changing all the time, and the plans people originally had suddenly become redundant.
By taking more ownership, individuals can redesign their plans, and find ways of overcoming the obstacles that are present so they can take more action towards making progress.
Self and Peer Coaching

In it’s most basic form, this is an in-the-moment self-coaching tool. This means that when individuals are faced with challenges, they can go through The 5 Ownership Habits by themselves, often in their head, and find solutions in just a matter of seconds. It can be that simple and fast.
But for more complicated matters, we can also use the various tools to go through this process in much more depth. Furthermore, these tools can also be used to coach others. This makes the model truly adaptive and usable, which is what makes it so suitable for navigating the modern day business environment.
This is why the training process is important, because it helps individuals turn these tools into habits that they can run through in their own heads, as well as helping leaders improve their coaching ability so they can use these tools to coach others.
